United States Open Beer Championship

The entry date for the 2014 U.S. Open Beer Championship will be June 13, 2014 with the winners announced on July 4th. The U.S. Open is the only brewery competition to include professional breweries and award-winning home brewers. Last year, the entrants included more than 2500 beers in over 60 different categories.

In 2013 Capital Brewery in Middleton, Wisconsin was awarded Grand National Champion, winning three gold, one silver and two bronze medals. Sweetwater Brewing in Atlanta, Georgia took second and the Steven Point Brewing in Stevens Point, Wisconsin placed third.

Last year, homebrewers won a record 4 medals at the U.S. Open. Gautam Bagchi from Ohio won a silver medal for his Barky Pilsner while Kelsey McNair, Mark Girard and Andrew Mitchell took home bronze medals for their beers.

New to 2014 U.S. Open - Ciders
The sales of hard cider make up less than one percent of U.S. beer sales, but hard cider sales have more than doubled over the last two years. This year, the U.S. Open welcomes all professional cideries and breweries to enter in 3 hard cider categories that include New World Ciders, English Ciders, and Specialty Cider and Perry.  All Cider Entries will have a entry fee of $60.

Call for Entries

The deadline for entries for the United States Open Beer Championship will be June 13th. Winners will be announced July 4th. Each brewery may enter a maximum of 10 beers. In order to help small brewers in these tough economic times, each brewery will be allowed to enter 2 beers with no entry fee. If a brewery wishes to enter more than 2 beers, there will be a $60 entry fee per beer/cider/rootbeer. A brewery must submit a minimum of 5 beers to be considered one of the Top Ten Breweries. Entry Forms and Rules can be found on the on the competition website under registration.

79 categories will be judged this year. Winners will receive a medal in the shape of a beer stein for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Beers placing in the top 10 of each category and top 10 breweries overall will be featured in on BeerInfo.com. Along with the medals awarded, a Grand National Champion accolade will be awarded based on a point system for beers (5 minimum) entered in the competition.

Invited Homebrewers
Every year, the U.S. Open Beer Championship invites the winners of the National Homebrew Competition(HBC) to compete against the professional brewers. These champions may only compete in the style that they received a gold medal at the 2013 HBC. Last year, homebrewers took home 1 silver and 3 bronze medals. We wish the following homebrewers the best of success at this years U.S. Open.
